Dear McKay Families,This is Principal Ranae Quiring with an important message.  This morning, some of our students reported seeing a student on campus with a firearm. Around 11:25 a.m., our school went into a lockdown out of an abundance of caution. We immediately engaged our district’s safety and security team and law enforcement, and they worked together to fully investigate this incident. Law enforcement identified and detained all individuals believed to be connected to this incident. The report of a weapon was unfounded and all students and staff remained safe and there were no injuries related to this incident. The lockdown was lifted at 1:55 p.m. Students and staff were asked to shelter in place for a portion of the lockdown, which is one of our safety protocols.Law enforcement will continue investigating this incident in cooperation with our student threat assessment team. The safety of our students and staff is our most important priority and I really want to commend our staff and students for how well they performed during this event. Please know that McKay High School remains a safe place for students. I also want to recognize our students who did the right thing and reported their concerns to our office.I want to take this opportunity to remind us all of the role we play in keeping our schools safe.Safety concerns can be reported anonymously at any time using the SafeOregon app or by calling or texting the tipline at 844-472-3367.  Honesty and transparency play critical roles in safety and because of the seriousness of this incident, we want to assure you that our school remains a safe place for our students, staff and visitors. We are so grateful you are part of our McKay family and we will always take every possible measure to keep your child safe.
