Spotlight on Success: Business Partner of the Month for March 2018

Our Business Partner of the Month for March 2019 is Starbucks Coffee. We’re recognizing Starbucks for its support of our Career and Technical Education programs, our students and our staff.

Iban Lopez Tinoco, store manager of the Starbucks coffee shop at Lancaster and Silverton Road, represented Starbucks and received the award at the Salem-Keizer School Board meeting on March 12, 2019.

The list of ways Starbucks supports Salem-Keizer Public Schools is long. It includes:

  • Donating equipment for North Salem High School’s student run coffee shop
  • Providing coffee for AVID events, Career and Technical Education events
  • Providing breakfast and coffee for Summer Professional Development Trainings for teachers
  • Participating in mock interviews and classroom visits for AVID

As for Starbucks’ support for our CTE programs, it has been a sponsor of the CTE & Industry Summit for three years, and also has held competitions for students, based on the hit TV show “Shark Tank,” for the past two years.

This year’s student competition was called “The Pitch,” and was held at McKay High School last month. Teams of students from our high school Business and Marketing programs “pitched” new business ideas to a panel of Starbucks executives.

The first place winning team was Logan Lewallen and Owen McKay from Sprague High School. They presented a business idea for a Rift Cup that has a divider down the middle, so customers could buy two drinks in one cup.

Two McKay High School teams tied for second place. Students Matthew Quirarte and Javier Alcantar-Garcia suggested Starbucks target the growing Hispanic population nationwide by offering drinks and pastries derived from Hispanic culture.

Crystal Nguyen pitched the idea of Starbucks developing an ube latte. Ube is a sweet yam originating in the Philippines. Crystal’s presentation was impressive because at the last minute her teammates were unable to attend the competition, so she carried on solo with a poise that impressed the judges.

McKay High School CTE Showcase Hosts Stephens Middle 8th Graders

More than 330 eight graders from Stephens Middle School recently took a field trip to McKay High School to learn about Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs they can join as freshmen next fall.

“We’ve been really happy with the showcase process and we’re getting students in the right programs,” said McKay Assistant Principal David Wood.

McKay CTE programs include: Agriculture, Automotive Technology, Business and Marketing, Computer Programming and Engineering, Construction Technology, Culinary Arts and Nursing.

Salem-Keizer Board of Directors Votes to Approve Boundary Adjustments

The Salem-Keizer Board of Directors voted 5-2 last night to approve the boundary adjustment proposal brought forward by the Boundary Review Task Force. Directors Blasi and Lippold opposed. The boundary adjustments will go into effect for the 2019-20 school year and only apply to incoming kindergarten through third-graders, sixth-graders and ninth-graders. Students entering grades four, five, seven, eight, 10, 11 and 12 will not be impacted by the boundary adjustments. Transportation will be provided both for students in the new boundaries and those who are not impacted by the boundary adjustments and will be continuing in their existing schools. Students enrolled in special programs will continue in those special programs.

Families impacted by the boundary adjustments will receive personalized letters in their preferred language in the coming days detailing the transition. Maps are available at schools to review the 36 areas of Salem and Keizer impacted by the adjustments.

The Boundary Review Task Force is a 45-member volunteer committee comprised of representatives from the special education community, PCUN, Mano a Mano, Salem/Keizer Coalition for Equality, Salem-Keizer NAACP and all geographic regions.

Thanks to the community’s passage of a bond in May, SKPS will invest $619.7 million in Salem and Keizer in the form of school expansions, renovations and improvements over the next five to six years. Boundary adjustments will shift students away from crowded conditions and into these new, improved learning environments.

About the Boundary Adjustment Process

The district has created resources to help explain the boundary adjustment process. If adopted by the Salem-Keizer School Board on February 12, the proposed boundary adjustments would go into effect in Fall 2019.

Parents and guardians of students who could change schools because of boundary adjustment will receive a letter soon as firm information is available — prior to the Feb. 12 vote if possible, or immediately after the vote.

Here’s a timeline that describes what to expect, in English and Spanish. The boxes on the timeline include information about the process.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools Seeks Community Input on School Boundary Adjustments at Dec. 4 Listening Sessions

Parents, students, school neighbors and community members are invited to attend a Boundary Review Task Force Listening Session on Dec. 4 to share feedback on possible school attendance area boundary adjustments.

Boundary adjustments are needed to relieve overcrowding and put to use the new spaces being built in the 2018 bond program. During the boundary review process, all school attendance area boundaries in the Salem-Keizer School District are being reviewed, however not all boundaries will need to be adjusted.

A Boundary Review Task Force made up of community volunteers has been reviewing boundaries and proposing adjustments since early October. The goal of the Task Force is to create a recommendation for the Superintendent for adjusted boundaries that balances school enrollments across the district, prepares schools for future growth, and identifies implications for the 2018 bond program.

Public input is important to helping the Task Force create a proposal for adjusted boundaries. The community is invited to attend a Boundary Review Task Force Listening Session on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. at one of four locations:

Kennedy Elementary School

4912 Noren Ave. NE, Keizer
Areas of focus will be Keizer/McNary and West Salem schools, most notably: Claggett Creek and Whiteaker middle schools; Clear Lake, Cummings, Forest Ridge, Gubser, Kalapuya, Keizer, Kennedy, Myers and Weddle elementary schools.

Four Corners Elementary School

Areas of focus will be North Salem/McKay area schools, most notably: Houck Middle School; Auburn, Chávez, Eyre, Four Corners, Hammond, Hayesville, Lamb, Miller, Swegle and Yoshikai elementary schools.

Parents and community members from all school neighborhoods are welcome to attend; attendance is not limited to residents of the school neighborhoods listed.

The presentations at Four Corners and Waldo will be co-presented in English and Spanish. Additionally, Spanish interpreters will be available at all locations. Childcare and snacks will be provided.

Please contact SKPS at (503) 399-3290 for other accommodations, such as ASL interpretation, at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools to Host Native American Awareness Gathering

The free event features storytelling, dancing, dinner and more!

There are nearly 700 students in Salem-Keizer Public Schools (SKPS) who identify as Native American or Alaska Natives from 65 tribes, and on Friday, Nov. 30, they will be celebrated through native music, dancing, storytelling and a special native dinner. November is Native American Heritage Month, and this gathering is the culmination of a month-long celebration that also included a proclamation from the Salem-Keizer Board of Directors.

The event is open to the public and will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30 at Chemeketa Community College Building 2, 4000 Lancaster Drive NE, Salem. SKPS employees who attend may receive three professional development credits. The gathering is hosted by the Indian Education Program and the Indian Parent Advisory Committee.

The SKPS Indian Education Program provides services for students who identify as Native American or Alaska Natives including tutoring, college and scholarship information, the Eagle Feather Graduation Celebration, monthly meetings for parents and a culturally based academic summer program.

Every Day 24J

Missing a day or two of school may not seem like a big deal, but that time matters. If a student misses just two days of school a month, by the end of the year, that adds up to an entire month of lost instruction.

At Salem-Keizer Public Schools, we want all of our students to graduate prepared for successful lives. Students who regularly attend school are more likely to graduate, setting the stage for success in college and higher rates of employability.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools Launches “Every Day 24J!” to Address Chronic Absenteeism

Buses were rolling this morning carrying almost half of Salem-Keizer Public Schools’ (SKPS) 42,000 students, but with the back-to-school excitement was another message: “Every Day 24J!” Nearly one in three students in SKPS is chronically absent, and this year, schools and community organizations are collaborating to identify barriers to attendance and develop solutions.

The campaign officially launched at Auburn Elementary, where Principal Katie Shumway identified the shift in weather as one of the contributing factors to absenteeism. Auburn is a neighborhood school, and many of its 700 students live within the one-mile radius of the school, meaning they don’t have access school bus transportation. Through the work of the Every Day 24J committee, One Thousand Soles was able to purchase 50 pairs of rain boots at a reduced cost from Wilco. Students who attended the school’s back-to-school picnic received raffle tickets, and winners will be announced at the school on Mondays and Fridays – the days the school has the lowest attendance. Auburn is just one example of the purpose of Every Day 24J! – to identify barriers, create solutions and encourage positive behaviors.

“We believe that all parents want what’s best for their kids and that’s why we continue to look for ways to build relationships with families and strengthen community partnerships,” said Shumway. “We strive meet families where they’re at and provide the tools and resources necessary to get kids here and learning at Auburn every day. When we begin to see dips in student attendance, our community school outreach coordinator works to find out why and then identifies those resources that can create solutions.”

Additional community organizations have come forward to help provide rain gear for more students.

“We know that September is the most critical month for setting a student’s attendance pattern,” said Superintendent Christy Perry. “What happens during that first month sets the tone for the entire year, and we know there’s a direct correlation between attendance and graduation. We see chronic absenteeism from students across all spectrums – cultural norms and socioeconomic statuses play roles, but we also see students who are performing really well at school who might not see the connection between attendance and employability after graduation. We must all use our sphere of influence to make those connections for our children – their futures depend on it.”

Students who miss just two days of school a month will miss a month of school each year. If a student continues that pattern through elementary and middle school, he or she will have lost an entire year of instruction by ninth grade. According to the Oregon Department of Education, students who attend school regularly are 172 percent more likely to graduate.

South Salem High Senior Kudzai Kapurura shared her perspective as a student: “In high school, you’re an independent, so it’s no longer really your parents telling you to go to school – it’s more of a personal decision. Some students don’t want to go because they don’t feel like they’re included in the community at their school. I think more than it’s credited, that’s a big part of why attendance drops in high school. When students don’t feel included, their grades start to drop. That combination makes people not want to go.”

The Every Day 24J committee comprised of district staff and community members will continue to meet throughout the year to identify benchmarks for success and develop additional solutions to remove barriers for attendance. Through a grant from Kaiser Permanente, the Salem/Keizer Coalition for Equality is simultaneously developing attendance supports for families in the North Salem High feeder system.
