We are pleased to announce Carlos Ruiz as the new principal of West Salem High School.

Mr. Ruiz has deep roots in Salem-Keizer Public Schools, as a student, teacher and administrator. He previously taught at West Salem High School for eight years before taking his current role as an assistant principal at North Salem High School.

At North, his coordinated efforts with staff focused in the areas of developing professional learning, increasing community engagement, empowering students in leadership opportunities to improve climate and culture, strengthening academic programs and helping to redesign programs such as the English Language Development program and special education. He has a passion for shared leadership and collaboration with staff, students and community.

He is looking forward to improving opportunities for West students through an equity lens that meets the needs of every student.

Mr. Ruiz will begin his new role at West on July 1. Congratulations, Carlos Ruiz!

Donnie Kim

Please join us in congratulating Donnie (Donovan) Kim as he has accepted the position of athletic director/assistant principal for McKay High School.

Mr. Kim is committed to working closely with students, teachers, parents and community members to ensure every student graduates college and career ready.

Kim holds degrees in biology, science education and special education. He has spent his 10-year teaching career in a number of roles such as: engineering, science, and special education teacher.

He is driven by a strong desire to provide equity for all students and has increased access and achievement for minority and non-traditional students in advanced science and engineering courses. He is eager to incorporate this work in his new position as McKay High School!

Mr. Kim will finish the 2020-21 school year at North Salem High School where he is currently a teacher and instructional mentor.
