McKay Musician Places 2nd at State

Last Saturday was the OSAA State Solo Competition at Pacific University. Luis Mejia placed 2nd in state on euphonium (looks like a baby tuba). This is an amazing accomplishment. Luis is an extremely dedicated musician, and he just finished a recorded audition for one of the Marine bands. Congratulations Luis! Go Scots!

Salem-Keizer FFA Chapter at Oregon Ag Fest 2019

Career and Technical Education students from McKay in the Salem-Keizer FFA Chapter got up extra early last weekend. That’s because they volunteered all weekend at the Oregon Ag Fest, giving out free starter plants to visitors who dropped by the Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN) booth.

Royal Scots freshman Rebekah Major says volunteering last weekend at the OAN booth tested students’ social skills, helped them improve problem solving and taught them how to work quickly to help customers. The OAN supports McKay’s agriculture program and the FFA chapter by donating giving students a chance to win scholarships, and by donating money to help raise the next generation of agricultural professionals.

McKay teacher Krysta Phillips says she loves the Oregon Ag Fest, and has been bringing her children to the event for years. She says Salem-Keizer FFA students learn professional skills like customer service and benefit from interacting with people from the very young to seniors. McKay teacher Gearld Hosler says that Salem-Keizer FFA students learn professional skills like accountability, time management and communication. He said another important skill students learn is how to answer customers’ questions.

Summer Work Opportunity for McKay Students

See the attached flyer regarding this summer’s Youth Litter Patrol, an ODOT program that was founded in 1977 to help clean up highway rights of way. This is a great opportunity for students at least 16 years old to work outdoors with a team and have a role in maintaining the environment—while earning pretty good money for a summer job!

New School Dance Policy

The safety and security of every student is our highest priority here at McKay High School. Because we do strive to create the safest environment possible, the school district has recently adopted new policies and precautionary measures for school sponsored dances. These policies will apply to Prom, scheduled for April 27th. Attached you will find:

·       A letter from Director of High Schools, Larry Ramirez, outlining the new policy in detail.

·       An agreement that must be signed and submitted prior to attending any dance.

·       An Application for a non-McKay student to attend a McKay dance that must also be submitted in advance.

Please take the time to review these documents so you are most prepared to have a fun and safe experience. Thank you.

McKay’s Banking & Financial Systems team placed 4th, also qualifying for nationals. The team of Carolina Segura, Cynthia Lor, and Cesia Olvera faced a very challenging scenario, but managed to rise into the top 4.

Our Business Ethics team of Andrew Dang, Nathan Nguyen, and Jordan Cousineau faced a daunting challenge against 22 other teams and pulled off a 7th place finish.
