McKay Students Excel in MESA Competetion

The McKay High School Team finished 2nd in their respective division at Oregon MESA’s inaugural Demo Day invention competition. The event was held at Ziba Design, a renowned design firm in Portland. The teams also won the audience choice awards in their division.

For the Demo Day competition, students were challenged to design, build, and program an invention to address a challenge for a client experiencing vision impairment. The invention also had to incorporate a microcontroller. In the semi-final round eighteen teams from schools across Portland and Salem submitted videos presenting their projects. Four high school teams and three middle school teams were selected by judges to advance to the final round at Demo Day on February 9th. At Demo Day, each team gave a four-minute pitch of their inventions to a panel of expert judges, which included Portland State University faculty, industry engineers, product designers, and business entrepreneurs.

The team from McKay High School placed 2nd in their division with their design of a reading aid glove for a client experiencing macular degeneration. The students on the team were Lorenzo Alvarez, Luis Castro, and Saúl Martinez Chavarin and were advised by McKay math teacher, Katrina Hull.

Students will have the opportunity to compete again this year at the annual MESA Day competition in May at Portland State University. Winners of MESA Day will advance to the 2017 MESA National Engineering Design Competition, held this year in Philadelphia.
