The State Capitol is busy with the business of the legislative session, but elected officials turned the capitol over the the YMCA Youth and Government Program last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the 71st Youth Legislative Session. This annual event brought together about 100 students from five high schools to run a mock legislative session, complete with elected youth leaders.

McKay had a small delegation of six, but they made a powerful impact. The group of Adriana Escorcia, Jasmin Ramos, Josie Carstensen, Daniel Dang, Raul Marquez, and Andrew Kalmen performed so well that they were awarded the Outstanding Delegation Award during the closing joint session on February 18 in the Oregon House Chamber.

This honor was only part of the mark left by the McKay Delegation this year. Adriana Escorcia was elected Senate Sergeant-at-Arms and was an effective and respected leader during the senate sessions.

Additionally, the delegation was successful in moving one measure through both chambers and the measure was signed by the Youth Governor. Another measure passed both chambers and was waiting for the Youth Governor’s consideration when the session came to an end on Saturday afternoon.

These outstanding students represented McKay very well and are already making plans to make an even bigger impression next year. For more information and to become part of the 2018 delegation, talk to one of these delegates or to Mr. Garner, Club Adviser.
