McKay Turf Project Underway

The McKay Athletic Booster Club is building a turf football field at McKay.  We are very excited about the installation of the new turf field this summer!  Work is underway, and during the summer, there will be no access to the field or the track.  We are sorry for any inconvenience, but remember it is a temporary disruption for a long-term benefit for the entire McKay community.  The field will be ready for use by the time school opens in the fall.  Our ribbon cutting ceremony will be at our Green and Gold Day, August 19th.  The boost club, and McKay High School would like to say thank you to the community and everyone in Salem and Keizer who contributed to this project to make it a reality!

Addressing Overcrowding at McKay

Enrollment growth over the years has created over-crowding at McKay.  Our facility is currently over-capacity and more students are expected in the future.  During the summer, we are adapting the testing lab into three classrooms.  This is not ideal and is not going to fix our building capacity needs, but we are doing what we can to provide a productive learning environment for students.  The school board voted to put a bond on the May 2018 ballot. The details of the bond package are not final yet, but if a bond were to pass, part of the bond money will be used to add space to all high schools in Salem-Keizer, including McKay.  Until there is a more permanent solution to our need for additional space, we will adapt.

Summer Construction at McKay Impacts Summer School

We are excited to announce there is some summer construction at McKay that will temporarily change parking and where visitors enter the school.  Some of the work taking place includes converting the testing lab to three classrooms, and some new equipment in the gym (bleachers, dividers, wrestling light, and some paint).  Because of this, the gym will be closed this summer.  Summer school will be located in the high school and the Annex this year.  The biggest project this summer is the turf field!

Culinary Classes Cook Up Success

McKay Culinary students were given the opportunity to cater a four course meal for 160 people at North Salem High School. The event was the annual JROTC Cadet Ball. Thirteen McKay students put in anywhere from 3 to 12 hrs immersing themselves fully in the hospitality industry to cater the event. They started by setting the room, prepping the food, hand passing appetizers, cooking the food, serving the food, and finally cleaning up. The menu consisted of a variety of one to two bite appetizers, green salad, Ribeye steaks or hand stuffed Chicken Cordon Bleu with Orange Ginger Carrots, Garlic Smashed Potatoes, and cake for dessert.

MESA Team Makes Final Round!

Our McKay team RECYCL3D made it through to the final round of the Cleantech Challenge 2017!

What does this mean?

*Our McKay team received $2,500 in funding to purchase supplies and start testing phase of their business concept. They were 1 of only 6 teams selected to make it through to this final round.

*The students have 90 days to bring this idea to life!

*This summer the students will be partnered up with business mentors from both Salem and Portland.

*RECYCL3D will show off their finished product at Oregon BEST FEST.

Their business idea: Take lunchroom plastic, clean the plastic, grind the plastic down, and then extrude the plastic into 3D filament that can be sold for profit to go back into STEM programs. Once they have the best process in place, their idea is to sell toolkits that include a grinder, extruder, and 3D printer to other schools to help STEM funding across the globe. You can view their pitch here.

We need your help, if you are available and interested in donating your time this summer to work with our students on this project please let us know. No technical experience required.
